Summer Thrifting
Posted on June 17 2010
I love heading out on a Saturday for a day of thrift-storing with $40 in my pocket and a hope to find something that I just can’t live without… well, okay, maybe I could live without it, but it would look cool in my house! Here are a few tips for having success every time.
Tip #1: Sometimes, coming home empty-handed is better than spending money on something that will never see the light of day or get any use. Have a plan before you go! Maybe you’re looking for a specific toy, that special dish, or a good book to read when you have some down time. Whatever it is, have somewhat of an idea of what you are looking for.
Tip #2: Know your stuff. Look for name brands, signatures on art, dates, and most importantly, price. Let’s be honest… if the price is right and you could use it, you might as well put it in your bag of goodies. The more educated you can be on the things you are looking for, the better, because thrift stores don’t always have the time to research every item that comes through the door. There are definitely some good deals to be had. I have a friend that supplements her income by going to thrift stores on a regular basis to find things to sell on eBay for a profit.
Tip #3: Don’t be afraid to bargain! Again, sometimes thrift stores don’t always have time to research what something is worth. The price might be a little high, but you will never know if they will take less unless you ask. Bargaining is a fine art. Think of the most money you’d be willing to pay for an item and make your offer slightly less than that amount. If they counter-offer, you may still be able to get it at the price you want, and if they take your first price, you’ve got yourself a deal! Remember, the worst thing that can happen is that they will stick to their original price.
I hope these tips help you on your journey to find that item that you just can’t live without. I’d also encourage you to take time to volunteer or get to know the staff when you’re in the store if it isn’t busy. The staff could be a great asset to you in your quest to find what you are looking for. Happy hunting!
