Be Free!

I recently heard a pastor say, “You never see a moving truck following behind a hearse.” Everyone knows that everything we possess here on earth must ultimately be left behind. We also know that some people have the ability to accumulate more than others. So why do we spend so much of our lives focused on accumulating “things”?
Some may blame it on the recent commercialization of goods and services however if you look back into history you can see many kings would spend their entire lives trying to conquer other kings and their kingdoms. They wanted bigger and better. They wanted more “stuff”. Today our society is not much different. We will borrow, cheat, steal and kill to gain wealth (or in many cases to have the appearance of wealth).
Do you feel God is interested in our ability to accumulate material possessions? I would venture to say that most of you would agree that God is not concerned with how much is in our bank account. He is more concerned with our relationship with Him and what we do with our possessions here on earth.
Matthew 6:19-21 Jesus says, Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. In my opinion this is a freedom passage. Jesus is releasing us from the role of having to keep up with the Jones’s. This earth is falling apart. Why waste time accumulating.
I think most of us know this command but it is another thing to put it into practice. God desires an abundant life for us however as humans we limit that to earthly abundance. So often we associate our self-worth with the balance in our checkbook.
If you are struggling with your relationship in Christ due to some financial blunders, I would encourage you to take it back to God. Nothing is too big for God to overcome. I would encourage you to take Jesus most important command to heart. When Jesus was asked what the most important commandment of all is He said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment”.
God does not want you to beat yourself up and live under the bondage of this world. Our Savior has come to set us free. If you feel you would like to talk with a Christian counselor regarding your situation please do not hesitate to call.
